About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Bethesda, Maryland, Spanish Diner offers an inviting, authentic taste of Spain with a focus on traditional yet straightforward dishes that evoke the warmth of a family kitchen. This Spanish restaurant and tapas bar masterfully blends the casual charm of a diner with the vibrant flavors of European and seafood cuisine, making it a delightful destination for families and lovers of small plates alike.

Step inside Spanish Diner and you’ll immediately notice the cozy, unpretentious ambiance where rustic wood accents and simple décor create an intimate setting perfect for savoring shared meals. Whether you’re stopping by for a lively happy hour or a leisurely lunch, the atmosphere feels relaxed yet vibrant, mirroring the convivial spirit of Spanish dining.

The menu stands out for its tempting variety of traditional Spanish dishes. Among the highlights is the Family Feast: Fiesta Española For 4 — a generous spread featuring Aceitunas Aliñadas (marinated olives), crisp and creamy Croquetas, spicy patatas bravas, classic tortilla de patatas, succulent Gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp), and the fresh, tangy Ensalada Ucraniana. This vibrant combination delivers a feast of flavors, textures, and colors that truly transport you to Spain’s bustling tapas bars.

For a hearty and soul-warming experience without the fuss, the Menu Del Dia De Albondigas is a crowd-pleaser. It features tender Albondigas con Arroz (Spanish meatballs with rice), accompanied by olives, refreshing glasses of Gazpacho, crusty Pan con Tomate (bread with tomato), and a creamy flan for a sweet finish. Not to be overlooked is the Menu Del Dia De Coliflor that includes rich, velvety Coliflor con Bechamel, offering comfort food Spanish style.

As for desserts, Spanish Diner excels in comforting classics that feel like a warm hug. The Arroz Con Leche — a luscious rice pudding from Asturias — brings gentle sweetness and creamy textures that soothe the palate. Meanwhile, the Flan De Mama Marisa, rooted in renowned chef José Andrés' family recipe, is decadently smooth and served with airy whipped cream, and the Tarta De Chocolate Y Queso San Sebastian features the beloved “burnt” goat cheesecake with an inviting chocolate twist.

The carefully curated beverage list complements the food perfectly, featuring Spanish imports such as sparkling and still Sant Aniol water, and unique non-alcoholic options including Kas sodas and Mexican Coke, all enhancing the authentic dining experience.

Guests often praise the attentive and friendly service, creating a welcoming environment that makes you feel like a regular from the start. While some diners have noted minor shortcomings like the occasional strong scent in the paella or the practicality of oversized serving spoons, most reviews celebrate the genuine, home-cooked flavors that bring a slice of Spain to Bethesda.

Whether you’re seeking the simple pleasure of sharing tapas with friends or craving a hearty, nostalgic family meal, Spanish Diner delivers heartfelt Spanish cuisine with a straightforward charm. It’s a place where authenticity meets comfort — a true homage to the tradition of eating well, together.

Service was spot on, ambiance was nice, drinks were fine, small plate food was quite good, but I was disappointed in the main dish. The paella was quite pungent in odor, and that was reflected in the taste. I don't think I would visit for dinner again, but a happy hour wouldn't be out of the question.

Friend and I enjoyed lunch here. The food was tasty and we savored each bite but do understand that they only have huge ladle size spoons, which are not easy to eat with. The croquetas could be eaten with a fork, but the beef stew would have been far more enjoyable with a normal size soup or tablespoon. The Spanish ham and cheese sandwich was delectable, and also could be eaten by hand. We managed the delightful flan with demitasse spoons, apparently the only alternative.

Don José, ¡no merece 4 estrellas! ¡Al rescate con 5 estrellas de DC Gourmet! #DCGourmet5stars To fully appreciate this new take on light Spanish fare, one has to have spent time in Spain. I was there for a month as a student. The essence of this place is in the name: Spanish + Diner. It’s simple, well-executed, delicious. Staff is friendly. From the simplest of Bikini sandwiches, reminiscent of those from my student train rides in Spain, the fried potatoes, to the paella , es muy delicioso. Recommend: paella, bikini sandwich, gambas al ajillo, cogollo, fried potatoes, calamar en su tinta. Bonus: Kas juice sodas with 14 calories is a refreshing and guiltless pleasure. DC and Bethesda, come on, you can do better. José Andrés’ Spanish Diner deserves 5 stars. We all miss Jaleo, but you can still find one in DC. Suggestion to management: think about getting back to basics with ropa vieja and croquetas. Less is more with those dishes.

We had lunch and enjoyed most of the dishes. Ordered three from grandma special and one from all day breakfast. The food is tasty and nice. Beef strip stew was a pleasant surprise. Interiors were nice and clean. Waitress was attentive.

If you want to try real homemade Spanish food, the same one that you grandma would cook for you, this is the place. It is offered a large variety of Spanish typical plates. Not fancy at all, simple plates, just real, tasty and incredible plates that you would it in your regular life in Spain. Cocido croquettes are delicious. The bechamel is greatly achieved. Huevos rotos de Casa Lucio with jamón is always a good choice and you can order them depending on your party size. The Ensaladilla is also very fresh, with the potatoes baked perfectly and the mayonnaise well cooked. Staff here are really attentive. I’ve come multiple times and I’ve been always served by Lorena, who is adorable and offers her best service to make you enjoy the meal. Price here is average compares to Washington, with some plates more expensive due to the nature of the ingredients. Other than that, it is very affordable. I recommend ordering 3-4 plates to share for a party of 2.

I just came home from here. It's New Years Eve. They had a 5 course menu planned for the night. My goal was to try everything. So I ordered for 2. I'm not a drinker of alcoholic beverages, so I got the bottle cola and Sprite instead. I got the tomato bread and salad first. Both were delicious! Next up I got a shrimp and crab meat salad and fried potatoes. Potatoes were a bit spicy, but the taste of both plates were great! Then came the shrimp bowl and calamari. I had to ask for lemon to put over the calamari because it was a bit bland, but after I got lemon slices, both plates were flavorful and delicious. The main course meals after eating a bunch of delicious food, were a bit disappointing. I got the lamb which was severely underdone. They took it back, but instead of a fresh plate my current pieces were simply pan seared again which made the outside hard, but the inside still undercooked. The other main course I ordered were the meatballs. Definitely great in taste, but very "different" in texture. These meals could've been better hence the 4 stars for food. For dessert I got the flan and fruit salad and both tasted fabulous. The service was amazing in spite of the main course issues. I tip very well for good service and that is exactly what our waitress received. I'll definitely be back!

Very interesting flavors. This restaurant is worth a visit. If I had time, I would have tried the jambalaya, which takes 45 minutes to prepare. It looks like it would be delicious. Con: We had a party of 10 and they split us up. The restaurant was not crowded and we were seated far away from each other. This was a business lunch, where remote workers were meeting their co-workers in person for the first time. That was a smite bumming.
